Social media for brands, festivals and businesses is important for engaging with customers but more importantly showing potential customers what it is you do. For this reason I have collected together a go to kit which I use in my work. This kit includes a range of items which work to collect content for both images and video. Have a look at the kit below and see what you think. Leave any comments in the section below. I will show you my field kit for events and some other setups like my battery charger toolbox at a later date.
A great piece of kit as it is carry on luggage size and it restricts me into only bringing what is necessary rather than lots of extra bits and pieces.
Great camera for the price has a flip out screen which is great if you have to film shots at awkward angles. I purchased a twin lens kit so I was able to use the 18-55mm STM for general use and the 75-300mm Twin Lens for stage photography and portraits. As i have upgraded my lenses I think my next stop is to upgrade the camera to the 70D (UK or USA) so that I can use the on board WIFI to get my images online faster.
Stock Lenses: As I said above I was working with the kit lenses of Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS STM and Canon EF 75-300mm III (UK or USA) both lenses worked great but I thought that I might need some better quality for some images so I had to invest. First up was:
I found that I had to do alot of head shots for events and this lens was pretty much point and shot with very little work required. As its a fixed lens you have to just get the person in frame and off you go!
I was looking at spending my money on a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens but having tried the Sigma I found that it fit exactly what I needed in a general purpose walk around lens.
What can i say at F2.8 this lens is great in low light conditions which is perfect for the stage work that I needed.
Working with Social Media means that you have to try and have everything available straight away, I’m lucky that aswell as taking images myself I work with experienced photographers on events who also feel the same. If you don’t have WIFI on board like the pros there are a few options, I have tested both EyeFi (UK and USA) and the Toshiba Flash Air (UK and USA) At the moment both cards seen to be great value in what they offer and seem very capable for what i need, I’ll reserve judgement until after this summers festivals.
The Flash I use at events for sheer simplicity is the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT (UK or USA) shooting off the camera it can tell settings from the camera and work accordingly. Really simple to use for anyone. For anyone looking to use the flash off the camera have a look at the triggers below.
While currently I have only 2 I have put in an order for 2 more of these Yongnuo RF-603 II Wireless Flash Trigger/Remote C3 (UK or USA) as simple as the flash was to use these guys offer perfect triggering off camera every time.
Currently I have a tripod for some of the video work and a mono pod for some of the photography work but I find myself relying more and more on the monopod for portability and the cool piece of kit I found below.
The monopod that I use is also from manfrotto and is probably one of the cheapest models they have
Coupled with my monopod I found a base or legs that worked to provide more stability to my camera, while I would never leave my camera unatended or free standing on it, I found that the Goliton® Mini Tripod Base (UK or USA) was useful to do some video applications.
So what do you think of my gear? Do you think I need anything else? Write your suggestions in the comments below!
